When surfing debuted in the Olympics during Tokyo 2020 – which, due to pandemic delays, actually ran in the summer of 2021– it was a test run. It was a trial; an audition to see if surfing would fit the Olympic mold, to see if it would resonate with viewers like other Olympic mainstay sports. Turns out, it did.
